Thousands of people took to the streets Sunday across Russia to demand the release of jailedopposition leader Alexei Navalny,

keeping up the wave of nationwide protests that have rattled the Kremlin. Hundreds were detained by police.

On Sunday, January 31, a wave of demonstrations took place in which tens of thousands of Russian citizens gathered all over the country, despite police warnings to citizens on social media, and dozens of demonstrators were arrested.

During the past week, the protests swept 11 different time zones.

Russian authorities have made huge efforts to stem the wave of demonstrations after tens of thousands gathered across the country at the end of last week in the largest and broadest display of discontent Russia has seen in years.

“I’m not afraid, because we are the majority,” said Leonid Martinov, who took part in the protest. “We should not be afraid of clubs because the truth is in our favor.”

At one point, crowds of demonstrators marched towards the Matroskaya Tishina prison where Navalny is being held. They were met by battalions of riot police, who pushed the march back, chasing protesters across the squares, arresting dozens, and beating some of them with batons. However, protesters continued to march around the Russian capital, winding around police belts.
